Bake a birthday cake to donate to a family who can’t afford one with your hen party.

About Free Cakes for Kids

Free Cakes for Kids is a movement of local volunteers and community groups, who share a simple belief: every child deserves a birthday cake. Since 2008, they have been baking for hundreds of families who find it difficult to provide a birthday cake for their child. Volunteers support these families in a free, friendly, and confidential way by simply baking a cake for them.

All the cakes are homemade and delicious, usually featuring the child’s favourite theme or style. The Free Cakes for Volunteers do this because they love baking and are passionate about supporting their community.

Why volunteer by baking at your hen party?

Lots of hen parties like to do a hands-on activity for a few hours and if your bride is a passionate baker (or just loves cake!) then a baking workshop, or doing some baking at home, could be an easy choice of activity.

Of course you could eat all the cake yourselves, but by giving your bake to a child that would miss out on a birthday cake will make the whole activity feel special in an extra way as well. And there can surely be some cakes left over for the hens too!

If you’re not confident in baking a full decoration cake, you could also offer to bake cupcakes. And if you want to improve your baking skills at the same time then you could take a cake making or decorating class as your hen party activity, with a plan to donate the cake afterwards.

How does it work?

Children and families are referred to their local Free Cakes for Kids group by organisations throughout the UK who work with families and children - including schools, food banks, hostels and charities. The community groups bake for children aged 1 to 18.

The cakes are home-made by volunteers who bake and decorate cakes in their own homes to the very best of their ability. Cakes are made with love and care, but are rarely made by professional cake makers, and all bakers sign up to strict hygiene and confidentiality standards.

If your bride loves baking and you’re planning to do a baking class or activity at home, supporting Free Cakes for Kids could be as simple as baking and decorating an extra cake that you’ll donate that weekend to the family who has asked for it. Read on for exactly how to find a child to bake for.

How to support Free Cakes for Kids

  1. Read the Free Cakes for Kids guide carefully - you’ll need to make sure you can support food safety standards when you’re baking, since you’re going to donate food. You also need to respect the privacy of the family you’re baking for.

  2. Look for a Free Cakes for Kids group local to your hen party - contact the group directly via the email or their social media to tell them your interest in baking for a family, and give them the date of your hen party. They’ll coordinate with you to find someone for you to bake for.

  3. You’ll need to be able to drop off the cake to the family on the weekend of your hen do , so make sure you factor that timing and transport into your hen party itinerary.

  4. The ingredients for the cake are funded by the person donating, so don’t forget to include that in your hen party budget. We have a great hen party budget planner in our free Hen Party Planning Kit.

  5. Once you’ve got your baking donation confirmed, you can decide if you’re going to bake from home or find a cake baking class for your activity.

  6. Bake!
